Unpopular wife of King Henry III of England - The daughter of Raymond Berenger IV, Count of Provence, Eleanor married Henry on January 14, 1236. The couple were crowned six days later. Eleanor was unpopular in England because she was arrogant and persuaded her husband to place her foreign relatives in prominent government positions. The financial favours granted to them were a serious drain on the country and worsened the already bad relations between Henry and his barons.  
In 1253-54 Eleanor acted as coregent with the king's brother, the Earl of Cornwall, while Henry was away in Gascony. After Henry's death and the accession of her son as King Edward I in 1272 Eleanor became a nun at Amesbury Abbey, where she died.
