Sir Thomas was a distinguished soldier who served under Lord Latimer in the reign of Richard II and in John of Gaunt's expeditions against Scotland and Castile. In the reign of Henry IV he served against the Scots and the French and against Owen Glendower. In 1403 he escorted Joan of Brittany to England (Henry IV's bride). 
He commanded the left wing of Henry V's army at Agincourt and was made a Knight of the Garter on 23 April 1416.
